biography text
Craye’s parentage has not been established beyond reasonable doubt, but it is likely that he was a kinsman, perhaps a son, of the widow Alice Craye, who between 1418 and 1423 was party to several grants of property in Devizes. One of these saw her settle a tenement with a courtyard in Newport on her daughter, another Alice.1 Wilts. Hist. Centre, Wilts. deeds, 212B/2276, 2278. No details of John’s career or trade have come to light, but in 1437 he was one of the men to stand surety for the parliamentary attendance of John Gough*, one of that year’s MPs for Devizes.2 C219/15/1.
