s. and h. of John Vampage (d.1398) of Pershore. educ. ?M or I. Temple. m. (1) Elizabeth, A visitation ped. identifies her as da. of Thomas Walter: Vis. Worcs. (Harl. Soc. xxvii), 68-69. If the most prominent contemporary of that name is intended, he was a lawyer from Carmarthen and a servant of Hen. V as prince of Wales: R.A. Griffiths, Principality of Wales, i. 129. This Walter, however, left two coheiresses, neither of whom was married to our MP: K.B. McFarlane, Eng. in the 15th Cent. 159-60. A more reliable clue to her identity is provided by a lawsuit of 1431 where she is described as the executrix of a chaplain, Henry Bydford: CP40/681, rot. 340d. at least 1s. 2da.; (2) 1448, Elizabeth, da. of Sir Richard Vernon*, at least 1s. That he married Elizabeth Chetwode is suggested by O. Manning and W. Bray, Surr. ii. 586, on the basis that the Uvedale arms appear on the seal of a deed of 1472. But Elizabeth Chetwode was not, as there stated, Elizabeth, the wid. of Thomas Morstead, the royal surgeon, for Morstead’s widow John Wood III*, the future Speaker, and was the da. of John Mitchell I* of London. Uvedale is not mentioned in studies of the Chetwodes: S. Tucker, Ped. Fam. Chetwode, 5, 7; J. Bridges, Northants. i. 218.

Easter 1435, Elizabeth (fl.1446), C67/39, m. 32. da. and h. of Thomas Foxley* by Margery da. and h. of Margaret Westington of Ayot St. Peter, Herts., prob. 3s. inc. Henry* and Reynold† (both d.v.p.), 1da.; (2) Margaret, da. of Alice (c.1410-1439), gdda. and coh. of Thomas Poynings, Lord St. John (d.1429), Alice married twice: (1) John Orell; (2) Sir Thomas Kingston. Her heir in 1439 was her three-year-old son Thomas Kingston, but it is not stated in the inq. post mortem whether her three daughters, Elizabeth, Eleanor and Margaret, were the daughters of Orell or Kingston: CIPM, xxv. 183; CPR, 1436-41, p. 248. ?3s. inc. The ascription of Uvedale’s sons to their respective mothers causes some difficulties, but Henry was certainly the s. of Elizabeth Foxley (C140/49/26), Reynold and Nicholas were alive by 1449 (Lambeth Palace Lib. Reg. Stafford, f. 176), Sir William was born in about 1454 and married the da. of his stepmother Elizabeth Norbury, and Robert was definitely Sir William’s half-brother, being the s. of the same Elizabeth (PCC 15 Milles – PROB11/8, f. 124). This only leaves uncertainty about Thomas and the younger William: Add. Ch. 24638; PCC 16 Wattys (PROB11/6, f. 115). Dist. Hants 1439, 1458, 1465; Kntd. 23 May 1465.
