Although the writ E404/73/1/112 records that he was admitted and charged as wardrober on the field at Northampton, his formal appointment was dated 1 Sept.: CPR, 1452–61, p. 646. He later claimed to have served for 169 days, which if counted from 1 Sept. takes his term to 16 Feb. 1461, the day before the second battle of St. Albans. He was succeeded by George Darell, appointed by Edw. IV, who accounted from 17 Apr.: E361/6, rot. 53.

Sheriff, Surr. and Suss. 5 Nov. 1466–7. On 27 June 1467 he was sued by Ralph Tickhill for £100 as penalty under the statute of 1445 for making a false return to Parl. Tickhill claimed that the bailiff and burgesses of Bletchingley had elected him and John Roger III* to represent their borough, and an indenture to this effect had been drawn up between Vaughan as sheriff on the one part and the bailiff and burgesses on the other, but that Vaughan had returned a different indenture, witnessing the election of John Roger and Thomas Combe*. The suit was adjourned to the Mich. term and its outcome is not known: E13/153, rot. 24.

If the most prominent contemporary of that name is intended, he was a lawyer from Carmarthen and a servant of Hen. V as prince of Wales: R.A. Griffiths, Principality of Wales, i. 129. This Walter, however, left two coheiresses, neither of whom was married to our MP: K.B. McFarlane, Eng. in the 15th Cent. 159-60. A more reliable clue to her identity is provided by a lawsuit of 1431 where she is described as the executrix of a chaplain, Henry Bydford: CP40/681, rot. 340d. at least 1s. 2da.; (2) 1448, Elizabeth, da. of Sir Richard Vernon*, at least 1s. The ascription of Uvedale’s sons to their respective mothers causes some difficulties, but Henry was certainly the s. of Elizabeth Foxley (C140/49/26), Reynold and Nicholas were alive by 1449 (Lambeth Palace Lib. Reg. Stafford, f. 176), Sir William was born in about 1454 and married the da. of his stepmother Elizabeth Norbury, and Robert was definitely Sir William’s half-brother, being the s. of the same Elizabeth (PCC 15 Milles – PROB11/8, f. 124).
