SKELTON, John II (c.1390-1458), of Armathwaite, Cumb.

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on
Family and Education
b. c.1390, When John was a juror in the proof of age of his kinsman, John Skelton of Branthwaite, in 1441, he was said to be 50 years old; in the following year he was said to be 48 ‘and more’ when a juror in the proof of age of his father’s godson, John Denton of Carlisle: CIPM, xxv. 614-15. Such estimates are not generally to be relied upon, but, in this case, a birthdate in the early 1390s is consistent with all else known of his career. 2nd s. and event. h. of Sir John Skelton* by his 1st w. m. Margaret (fl.1460), ?2s. ? inc. Robert†. This is the Christian name of his wife at the time of his death: C139/167/11. She is sometimes said to have been the da. and coh. of William Bewley† (d.1433/4) of Thistlethwaite, Cumb., but in Bewley’s inq. post mortem her husband is identified as Robert Skelton: CIPM, xxiv. 141. This identification is supported by the writs of diem clausit extremum issued to the Cumb. escheator in 1439 in respect of Robert and his wife, Margaret: CFR, xvii. 104. Unfortunately no inqs. survive.

SINGLETON, Thomas (d.1458), of Great Chart, Kent and Hartwell, Bucks.

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on
Family and Education
?s. of John Singleton of Great Chart. Feudal Aids, vi. 473. m. by Jan. 1429, CCR, 1429-35, p. 32. Agnes (d. 21 Oct. 1479), ?da. or gdda. and event. h. of John Stokes of Stoke Goldington by Eleanor (d. aft. 1431), da. and event. h. of Sir Robert Luton† of Hartwell, 1da. The Commons 1386-1421, ii. 296; iii. 280-1, 654-5; VCH Bucks. ii. 298. According to VCH Bucks. ii. 296 (relying on the findings of a 16th-cent. heraldic visitation to Bucks.), Agnes was the da. of Eleanor Luton by her last husband, Thomas Stokes, but this is impossible, since Eleanor married Stokes in, or just before 1431, that is after Agnes married Singleton. It is not unlikely that Agnes was in fact the gdda. of Eleanor, whose first husband, John Stokes, died before 1398, by which date she was married to her second, John Bosenho†, who died in the mid or late 1420s. Dist. 1458.
