A Nicholas Latimer served as sheriff of Glos. 7 Nov. 1458–9, but as there is nothing to connect the MP with this county, it seems likely that the sheriff was a different man. Indeed, a writ de diem clausit extremum for a Nicholas Latimer was sent to the escheator of Glos. on 17 June 1461, only to be cancelled subsequently: CFR, xx. 2.

LATIMER, John (c.1399-1459), of Duntish, Dorset.

b. c.1399, CIPM, xxii. 63, 65-67. s. and h. of Sir Robert Latimer (1361-1435), of Duntish, by Margaret Heton, da. of Katherine (d.1422), sometime w. of Sir Edmund Cheyne† (d.1376) of Poyntington, Som. and Sir John Stretch† (d.1390) of Pinhoe, Devon. Ibid. Margaret, alive by 1374, was not the da. of Cheyne or Stretch, but had been born to Katherine by an earlier undocumented marriage: The Commons 1386-1421, iv. 510-11. The ped. in J. Hutchins, Dorset, iii. 705 identifies her as a da. of Sir William Pecche, but if this was indeed the name of her fa. he cannot have been Sir William Pecche† of Lullingstone, Kent, who died in 1399: The Commons 1386-1421, iv. 32-33. It is unclear precisely what Latimer inherited from his maternal grandmother when she died in 1422. m. ?Katherine, da. of Sir John Pipard, The name of his wife is taken from the ped. in Hutchins, iii. 705. 1s. The succession of the medieval mayors of Bodmin is uncertain, as little contemporary evidence survives. An early modern list gives the name of the mayor in 1439–40, 1442–3 and 1455–60 as Thomas Langher (or Laugher): Cornw. RO, Bodmin bor. recs., B/Bod/302, f. 4v; Maclean, i. 235.
