HULL, Henry (d.1490), of Larkbeare, Devon and Ashill, Som.

Family and Education
s. of John Hull* by his 1st w. m. (1) by 19 Dec. 1444, CPR, 1441-6, p. 316. Alice (d.c.1487), CFR, xxii. no. 115. While the writ issued to the escheator of Somerset and Dorset calls the deceased Alice, that to the escheator of Devon refers to her as Elizabeth. da. of John Beauchamp (d.v.p.), gda. and h. of Sir Thomas Beauchamp*, and wid. of John Speke of Haywood, Devon; The Commons 1386-1421, ii. 157; Som. Feet of Fines (Som. Rec. Soc. xxii), 198-9, 207. (2) Christine, da. of Sir William Paulet (d.1488) by Elizabeth, da. of John Denbaud of Hinton St. George, Som.; CIPM Hen. VII, i. 410-11. wid. of Nicholas Chichester (d. bef. 1488) of Raleigh, Devon, 1da. Vis. Som. (Harl. Soc. xi), 60; VCH Som. iv. 43; B. and A.P. Burke, Peerage and Baronetage (1930), i. 534. The identification of this 2nd wife presents some problems. J.S. Vivian, Vis. Devon, 492 erroneously calls her the da. of Sir Nicholas Paulet of Sampford Peverell. On chronological grounds, Chichester, who was dead by 1488, rather than Hull (as suggested by Burke), must have been her 1st husband: CIPM Hen VII, i. 270. Dist. Som. 1465.
Offices Held

Attestor, parlty. elections, Som. 1447, 1455.

Commr. of inquiry, Devon, Cornw. Nov. 1445 (piracy); to distribute tax allowances, Som. June 1468; of array Oct. 1469, June 1470, Apr. 1471, Som., Dorset Mar. 1472, Aug. 1473.

HUGFORD, Thomas (1394-1470), of Emscote, Warws.

Family and Education
b. 1394, s. and h. of Robert Hugford† (d.1411) of Emscote by his w. Joyce (d.1415). m. Margaret (fl.1452), The first certain record of this marriage dates from 15 May 1438, when the couple had a papal licence to have a portable altar: CPL, viii. 393. They had, however, already been married for several years, since an agreement for their daughter’s marriage was made as early as 1439: CPR, 1436-41, p. 343. Margaret’s family name was given in the inscription on the couple’s monumental brass, but was illegible when the brass was first recorded: W. Dugdale, Warws. i. 279. Dep. sheriff, Worcs. by appointment of Richard, earl of Warwick Mich. 1435–6, by appointment of Cecily, dowager-duchess of Warwick Mich. 1448–?28 July 1450. His formal appointment presumably ended with Cecily’s death on 28 July 1450, for on 19 Aug. the Crown nominated John Brome II* as sheriff and ordered Hugford to deliver the county to him: CFR, xviii. 144. Nevertheless Hugford continued to act for a short period, either under the late duchess’s commission or as Brome’s deputy. He conducted the Worcs. parlty. election of 14 Oct. 1450 before delivering the indenture to Brome for return into Chancery: C219/16/1.
