FASTOLF, John (d.1445), of Great Yarmouth, Norf. and Oulton, Suff.

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on
Family and Education
s. of Alexander Fastolf of Great Yarmouth. Add. 39848, no. 208; CAD, vi. C5935. m. (1) aft. 1415, Margaret (d. aft. 1 Feb. 1430), wid. of William Lovell (d.?25 Oct. 1415), 2da.; P.S. Lewis, ‘Sir John Fastolf’s Lawsuit over Titchwell’, Historical Jnl. i. 1, 6n, 10. (2) Katherine (d. 4 Jan. 1479), A. Suckling, Suff. ii. 40. da. and coh. of Roger Welsham (d.1401) of Runhall, Norf. and Willisham, Suff., Norf. RO, Norwich consist. ct., Reg. Harsyk, f. 273. wid. of John Sampson of Harkstead, Suff. Ibid. Reg. Gelour, f. 221; CP25(1)/224/113/53. C.F. Richmond, Paston Fam.: First Phase, 222n, erroneously states that Katherine married Sampson after the MP’s death. It is possible that Katherine was a half-sister of Fastolf’s first wife, Margaret, since her mother, who married Sir Robert Berney† after Roger Welsham died, refers to ‘her daughter’, Margaret Lovell, in her will of 1416: Norwich consist. ct. Reg. Hyrning, f. 5. ?Dist. 1439.
Offices Held

Attestor, parlty. election, Suff. 1433.

Commr. of inquiry, Suff. Sept. 1421 (illegal disseisin of Sir Robert Harling and Joan his wife), Norf., Suff. Aug. 1442 (non-payment of customs and subsidies); to collect parliamentary subsidies, Great Yarmouth Nov. 1433; CFR, xvi. 184. ? of array, Suff. Jan. 1436. The man who served on this comm. of array might have been the MP’s namesake, John Fastolf of Nacton.

J.p. Great Yarmouth 17 Apr. 1426–?Feb. 1438. There is no evidence that the man who was a j.p. for Norf. 8 Nov. 1423-July 1424, was the MP.

Collector, customs and subsidies, Great Yarmouth 18 Aug. 1433–?26 Jan. 1438. CFR, xvi. 144, 145, 147, 168, 169, 171; xvii. 12, 20; E122/151/63.
