DRURY, Henry (d.c.1443), of Ickworth and Wordwell and Sapiston, Suff.

Family and Education
s. and h. of Nicholas Drury (d.1456) of Thurston and Hawstead, Suff. by Joan, da. of Thomas Hethe (d.c.1414) of Mildenhall, Suff. and his w. Elizabeth; nephew of Sir Roger Drury† of Rougham. A. Campling, Hist. Fam. Drury, 30, 37; The Commons 1386-1421, ii. 803-4; iii. 367. m. bef. 1438, Elizabeth (d.1476), da. of George Heton*, at least 1s. 1da. Campling, 38-40; S. Hervey, Dictionary of Herveys, iii. 318. While Drury’s father-in-law was probably the Lincs. man who sat for Bridport in the Parl. of 1447, his identity is not completely certain. However, it is worth noting that the Bridport MP stood surety at the Exchequer in 1451 for his putative relative John Heton* who, like Drury, was a follower of the Stafford family: HP Biogs. ed. Wedgwood and Holt, 305; CFR, xviii. 212, 236.

Steward, Suff. and Essex for Humphrey, earl of Stafford (subsequently duke of Buckingham), by 12 Jan. 1440–d. C. Rawcliffe, Staffords, 205, 222. He was Stafford’s steward of three manors that had once belonged to the Clare inheritance: ‘Disining’, Haverhill and ‘Hersham’. Rawcliffe incorrectly states that all of these lordships lay in Suff., but while Disining (in Gazeley) and Haverhill certainly did, ‘Hersham’ was situated in the parish of Helions Bumpstead, Essex: CIPM, v. 538 (inq. post mortem of Gilbert de Clare, earl of Gloucester).

Justice itinerant, Brecon, for earl of Stafford, 1440. Ibid. 222.
