GREEN, Walter II (d.1456), of Hayes, Mdx.

Family and Education
?s. of Walter Green I of Bridgnorth, Salop. m. (1) by Jan. 1413, Alice, ?da. of Adam of St. Ivone, 1s. Sir Robert 3da.; (2) by June 1443, Elizabeth, da. and h. of Robert Warner (d.1439) of Cowley Peachley, Mdx., 2s. 3da.Green’s family tree is given in Mdx. Peds. (Harl. Soc. lxv), 79, but although other evidence supports the chronology of his marriages and the number of his surviving children (PCC 15 Stockton; CP25(1)293/70/274; Essex Feet of Fines, iii. 261), his own and his wives’ parentage cannot now be verified. It appears, however, that Robert Warner was in some way related to Green’s second wife (Cart. St. Bartholomew’s Hosp. ed. Kerling, 1143-4), so he may have been her father. Green had two other children, not named in this pedigree, Philip and Margaret, who predeceased him on 16 Sept. 1442 (Trans. London and Mdx. Arch. Soc. iv. 257). It has been assumed that they were the issue of his first marriage.

Notes

It is not easy to distinguish this Thomas Green from others of the same (very common) name. The Thomas Green who was probably his father was still alive in 1398: C67/31 m. 9. He is not to be identified with Thomas Green of Malpas, Cheshire, who died before 1407 (DKR, xxxvi (pt. 2), 202-3), nor, perhaps, with the yeoman of the King’s chamber who in 1397 was granted the keepership of Shrawardine park, and in 1398 was warden of Morfe forest near Bridgnorth: CPR, 1396-9, pp. 201, 292, 410; 1399-1401, p. 64.
