biography text

To the earlier biography the information should be added that Bole served at least two terms as bailiff of Bedford (an office he held in 1427-8 as well as 1418-19) and one as mayor.5 The Commons 1386-1421, ii. 274. During his second term as bailiff, he attested the borough’s election to the Parliament of 1427.

In December 1429 William Waweton* of Bedfordshire conveyed his interest in certain lands in Bedford to John Beaufort, earl of Somerset, and others, including John Ragon*, John Fitzgeffrey*, the MP and his relative Ralph Bole*. For what purpose is unclear, although it is likely that the Boles were involved in the capacity of feoffees.6 Bedford bor. recs. deed W23.

It is unclear whether the Thomas Bole who was serving as coroner of Bedford in the autumn 1441 was the MP or the younger namesake who was mayor of the town in 1450.

Notes
  • 1. The Thomas Bole, then mayor of Bedford, who attested the election of 1450 was probably a younger namesake. It is not clear which Thomas witnessed the borough’s elections to the Parls. of 1442, 1447 and Feb. 1449.
