An indication of the wealth that Northby amassed through trade is given in a petition presented to the chancellor of England by his former servant, John Cardole. Cardole claimed that in his will Northby had made a bequest of 100 marks in recognition of ‘son longe labour et service’. Two of Northby’s three executors, his son-in-law Nicholas Usflete* and the chaplain Roger Bubwith, had refused to honour the terms of the will despite having control of his goods worth some 3,000 marks.4 C1/68/187.
- 1. The earlier biography errs in stating that Northby had only one daughter, Margaret (d.1436), the wife of Nicholas Usflete. Usflete, in fact, was married to a second daughter, Matilda, who almost certainly predeceased her father: Borthwick Inst., Univ. of York, York registry wills, prob. reg. 2, ff. 58v-59.
