Bland was the son of a Tory Member for Pontefract, who acquired by marriage vast Lancashire estates, including ‘the whole of Manchester and its environs’.1N. Carlisle, Colls. Bland Fam. (1826), p. 60. In 1713 he and Richard Shuttleworth were chosen unanimously to represent the county.2HMC Portland, v. 221. Re-elected unopposed in 1715, he was one of the Jacobite M.P.s, taken into custody on suspicion of treasonable practices during the rebellion of that year.3CJ, xviii. 328. In 1720 he was credited by the South Sea Company with £1,000 stock at 275 without paying for it.4Ibid. xix. 573. In 1721 his name was sent to the Pretender as one of the leaders of the Lancashire Jacobites.5Stuart mss 65/16. Returned again after a contest in 1722, he did not stand in 1727. He died 9 Apr. 1743.
