biography text

Anthony Morgan acquired the manor of Freshwater by his marriage.1VCH Hants, v. 241; PCC 23 Lort. As lieutenant-governor of the Isle of Wight under Anne he built up an interest at Newport and at Yarmouth, which he appears to have managed for the Government after George I’s accession. In December 1714 the governor of the Isle of Wight, General Webb, complained that ‘Colonel Morgan has more credit with the great people than I have’.2T. Stephens, The Castle Builders, 41. He was returned for Newport in 1715 on the government interest but in 1717, when his petition succeeded, he chose to sit for Yarmouth, voting consistently with the Administration. Transferring to Lymington in 1727, he died 19 Apr. 1729, cutting off his eldest son with a shilling and leaving his property to be divided among his five younger sons.3PCC 171 Abbott.
