GOUGH CALTHORPE, Hon. Frederick (1790-1868), of Elvetham, Hants.

Calthorpe was returned for Hindon on the family interest by his brother George, an evangelical friend of William Wilberforce. He made no known speech in his first Parliament, in which his conduct was independent. He voted with opposition for the addition of Brougham to the Bank committee, 8 Feb. 1819, supported a review of the criminal law, 2 Mar., and was in the minority for the reduction of the junior lords of Admiralty, 18 Mar. On 29 Mar. he joined the majority on Wyndham Quin’s conduct. He opposed state lotteries, 4 May (and again 9 June) and voted for burgh reform, 6 May: he probably supported Catholic relief that week, as he later did, in accordance with his brother’s views. He was nevertheless in the government majority against Tierney’s censure motion, 18 May, and on the foreign enlistment bill, 10 June. On 23 June he supported Brougham’s motion for inquiry into the abuse of charitable foundations. He was one of the Members who stayed in town as late as 23 Dec. to support measures against radicalism. He died 2 May 1868.
