In the 30 years that Fane represented Lyme, he does not appear to have volunteered a word in debate. After 1788 he supported Pitt’s administration, though he does not seem to have been a regular attender. He was listed hostile to the repeal of the Test Act in Scotland in April 1791. On 4 Mar. 1793 he was in Ireland on public service and granted leave of absence. He was again an absentee in November and December 1795 and had to be summoned to the House in March 1801, although Lord Westmorland had urged him to attend.
