Pochin owed his county seat to the protection of the 4th Duke of Rutland and retained it unopposed during the minority of the 5th Duke. He gave a silent general support to Pitt, to whom he applied for patronage. He was listed hostile to repeal of the Test Act in Scotland in 1791, and only one minority vote, against the triple tax assessment, 14 Dec. 1797, is known. He died ‘in a fit of apoplexy’, 10 Sept. 1798, having shown ‘exemplary independence, integrity and loyalty’ in the discharge of his parliamentary duties.1PRO 30/8/168, ff. 1, 3, 5; Gent. Mag.
