Butler, a supporter of Catholic relief who had aligned himself with government since 1815, was again returned unopposed for Kilkenny on the family interest in 1820. No trace of parliamentary activity has been found for the brief period which elapsed before he succeeded his brother as earl of Ormonde. He received a United Kingdom peerage as part of the coronation honours in 1821 and was promoted in the Irish peerage four years later. He died in May 1838 at O’Dienne’s hotel, Dublin ‘after an illness of thirteen days, produced by a severe cold’.1 Gent. Mag. (1838), ii. 208-9.
