biography text

A fuller by trade, Godwin, judging from the scarcity of references to him, was among the lesser men to represent Northampton in this period. The townsmen were accustomed to choose relatively young men as their bailiff and MPs and, since he was serving as coroner 30 years after his term as bailiff, it is likely that Godwin conforms to this pattern. The only other references to him come from the parliamentary returns: he was himself elected on 18 Apr. 1425; in 1427 he offered mainprise for the attendance of Ralph Passenham*; and in 1433 did likewise for that of Walter Albon*.2 C219/13/3, 5; 14/4. He was probably dead by May 1451 when he was no longer one of the four town coroners.
