biography text
The names of the Carlisle MPs of 1437 are known only from the endorsement of the electoral writ, and they appear in an irregular form. When the endorsement was originally drafted it appears that a blank was left for the addition of the city’s MPs; then their Christian names were added in one hand and ink and their surnames in another. This latter consideration invites the conclusion that their names are fictions, but one of the MPs can be identified as Thomas Marshall*, a lawyer from Lincoln’s Inn with no known attachment to Carlisle.1 C219/15/1. Mabson’s identity, however, remains a mystery.
