biography text
Toppy defies certain identification. It is possible that his surname has been abbreviated in the return, and that it should read ‘Toppyng’. If so, the MP is probably to be identified with the Nicholas Toppyng who was one of the 154 attestors to the Cumberland election held in 1453,1 C219/13/4, 16/1. and as a kinsman of William Toppyng, who, between 1426 and 1436, served on at least four inquisition post mortem juries sitting at Penrith (Cumberland) and nearby Brougham (Westmorland).2 CIPM, xxii. 556; xxiii. 438; xxiv. 39, 676.
