biography text

Wyther is almost undocumented. He is not found in any of the surviving Hereford deeds, and his election to Parliament in 1427 is, in the surviving record, all there is to connect him with the city. Only two other references to him have been found: in March 1422 he was acquitted of disseising James Blount of a messuage in Ledbury, some 12 miles to the east of Hereford, and on 6 Apr. 1432 he was one of some 200 men who attended the county parliamentary election. This first reference suggests that he may have originated from Ledbury, perhaps as the son of William Wether alias Wyther, for whose murder a Ledbury man was pardoned in 1413.1 C219/13/5; 14/3; JUST1/1525, rot. 11; CPR, 1413-16, p. 13.
