biography text

More details can be added to the earlier biography.2 The Commons 1386-1421, ii. 325-6.

Given his connexion with Droitwich, it is likely that Brace was the ‘John Bras’ who witnessed a deed, in his capacity as one of the bailiffs of that town, at Michaelmas 1398.3 Leics. RO, Rothley Temple mss, 44’28/398.

A record of payments made to the j.p.s of Worcestershire in Henry V’s reign confirms that Brace was one of the busier members of the commission of the peace in that county. Between the spring of 1416 and the autumn of 1418 he worked for a total of ten days as a j.p., more than any of the other justices listed, save Richard Oseney* the clerk of the peace, even though he was not on the quorum.4 E101/592/27/2.
