biography text

The earlier biography conflates the MP with his namesake of Lapworth. It was the latter who, in 1408, in company with his wife, Margery, conveyed land there and elsewhere to Sir Thomas Burdet*, Thomas Crewe† and others. The confusion has arisen because our MP’s son and heir purchased these lands from Brome of Lapworth’s grandson and heir, John Audley, in 1436.1 CAD, iv. A6369; E40/4478.

The elder Brome was alive as late as 4 Sept. 1444 when he joined his son, already a far more important man than he, in the acquisition of property at Leek Wootton just to the north of Warwick.2 Warws. RO, Waller of Woodcote mss, CR26/XXV.
