More can be added to the earlier biography.2 The Commons 1386-1421, ii. 516-18. Charlton must be distinguished from the contemporary mercer Thomas Chalton.

Charlton was a more active member of the gentry community of his native Middlesex than his more prominent son. He frequently attested his neighbours’ deeds, and (as far as the evidence of parliamentary election returns enables us to tell) regularly attended the county court.3 Westminster Abbey muns. 426, 432, 438, 442, 453, 456, 475, 477; CPR, 1485-94, p. 147.

The execution of Charlton’s will, of which no details have been discovered, was entrusted to his widow, Elizabeth.5 KB27/746, fines rot. 1.
