Among the properties Cotyngham left to his son and heir Robert, was a messuge in Wycombe, but his title to it was far from assured. After his death, William Holt sued Robert in the Chancery, claiming that the late MP had only ever held the messuage as a feoffee to the use of his own father, John Holt. In riposte, Robert asserted that his father had bought the messuage for £40, but there is no known evidence for the outcome of this case.2 C1/16/383; C4/2/111.
