Fowell served as a juror at inquests held at his home town of East Grinstead in 1416, 1423 and 1424,3 C138/19/25; C139/3/30, 9/8. and again in October 1432, this last being the post mortem on Nicholas Carew†, the former knight of the shire for Surrey.4 C139/51/1. Meanwhile, he had been returned to Parliament on at least three occasions. It seems likely that it was the same Richard Fowell who was sued in Hilary term 1446 by the sons and executors of the late William Penbridge* of Lewes for a debt of £2,5 CP40/740, rot. 49. and he may have been the man of this name who was a juror at East Grinstead at the delayed inquisition post mortem on Henry, duke of Warwick, held in November 1450.6 C139/135/34. The former MP, or more likely a younger namesake, was bailiff of East Grinstead five years later.
