In 1425 when Garton was chosen as Dover and New Romney’s bailiff to officiate at the annual herring fair at Yarmouth his wages of five marks were met by contributions from five leading Portsmen, including John Braban* the mayor of Dover, who gave a mark each.2 Add. 29615, f. 84v.
