Hering’s appointment as keeper of Newcastle’s statute merchant seal suggests that he was, like several other of the town’s MPs, a lawyer, but, if so, his practice was not an extensive one. Nor does he appear to have been an active litigant, although, while sitting in the Parliament of 1422, he was the defendant in an action of debt brought by the archdeacon of Northumberland.3 CP40/647, rot. 177d. Despite being elected to Parliament on three occasions, he does not appear to have been among the probi homines of Newcastle and was never recorded as being present to attest a parliamentary election there.
