Lynde’s efforts on the city of Canterbury’s behalf in its long struggle with the abbot of St. Augustine’s over the manor of Langport were not restricted to his duties as its attorney. In September 1414 he was accused of leading a group of local men who illegally entered the manor and stole 20 of the abbot’s rabbits. The outcome of this case is not known.6 Add. 32311, f. 33.
Lynde’s election to the Parliament of 1415 has not been previously noticed. The shortest Parliament of the fifteenth century, it lasted just nine or ten days, starting on 4 Nov., and 20s. covered the full cost of Lynde’s wages. His companion in the Commons was John Sheldwich*, from whom he probably received his training in the law.7 CCA-CC-F/A/1, ff. 115, 120; PROME, ix. 112. It may have been Lynde’s professional associations with the Sheldwich family which led to him being admitted to Lincoln’s Inn, where John was also a fellow. He served a term as the Inn’s steward, as in November 1427 debts to various victuallers who supplied the Inn during his stewardship were ordered to be discharged.
- 1. The Commons 1386-1421, iii. 661 almost certainly errs in assuming that Henry was John’s nephew.
