Commr. of array, Salisbury Mar. 1440.
More may be added to the earlier biography.1 The Commons 1386-1421, iii. 675.
Man participated in the elections conducted in assemblies of the leading citizens at Salisbury, choosing the MPs for the Parliaments of 1422 (when he himself was elected), 1423, 1429 (when he was elected for the sixth and last time), 1433 and 1435.2 First General Entry Bk. nos. 231, 236, 265, 289, 305. He was a popular choice as an executor. Besides acting as such for the former mayor and MP John Becket†, before October 1427 he took on the administration of the will of John Fruysthorp*, who had sat with him in the Parliament of 1422 (albeit as a representative for Sarum),3 CIPM, xxiii. 143. in the late 1430s he served in the same capacity for John Bromley*, his companion for Salisbury in the Commons of both 1426 and 1429, and in early 1442 he was acting likewise for the five-times mayor William Waryn†.4 CP40/715, rot. 565d; 724, rot. 247.
Little is recorded about Man’s property in the city, save that in January 1415 he conveyed a tenement on the corner of St. Mark Street and Gigor Street to Joan, daughter of William Warmwell, a former citizen,5 Wilts. Hist. Centre, Salisbury city recs., Domesday bk. 3, G23/1/215, f. 13. and that in 1435 he acquired a messuage from a local wax-chandler.6 Wilts. Feet of Fines (Wilts. Rec. Soc. xli), 483.
Man probably died not long after his last recorded attendance at a meeting of the convocation of Salisbury, towards the end of 1442. In the summer of 1445 his widow Alice and her co-executors of his will, including Richard Payn*, were being sued in the court of common pleas by Man’s creditors, as well as by William Swayn*, who alleged that Alice wrongfully detained a pyx containing deeds. In February 1451 Alice was assessed for taxation in Wiltshire on her income from land worth £6 p.a.7 CP40/738, rots. 277, 382, 451; E179/196/118.
