Although a draper, Smith also traded in wine and he was among those who paid the maltolt for wine in New Romney in 1418-19, 1431-3 and 1435-6. In doing so he associated with leading Portsmen like James Tiece†, James Lowys* and Richard Clitheroe*.3 E.
