In November 1428 Thirlwall entered recognizances in £80 to guarantee that John Tamworth* would satisfy the Exchequer of the sum of nearly £95 charged him for alleged concealment of customs in his time as collector at Chichester.2 E159/205, recogniciones Mich. This suggests that he was a person of some substance.3 A man of this name had been appointed by Margaret, duchess of Clarence, as her receiver-general on 21 Apr. 1421, and continued to act for her and her son Edmund Beaufort, count of Mortain, at least until 1431 (E159/200, recorda Easter rot. 7d; E403/677, m. 18; 696, m. 19; 698, m. 9), but no evidence has been found to identify him with the Portsman of Rye.
