biography text

More may be added to the earlier biography.1 The Commons 1386-1421, iv. 814.

Westlond was excommunicated on 11 Feb. 1427 by the vicar general of the bishop of Chichester, after being accused of adultery.2 Suss. Arch. Colls. lxxxii. 138, from C85/47, no. 10. Presumably the sentence was lifted before his appointment as a tax collector in 1429. He was one of the jurors distrained to appear in the court of common pleas by writ dated 17 Oct. 1435, in the suit brought by Eleanor, widow of John, Lord Arundel and Mautravers, against Robert Mousehole* of Midhurst.3 CP40/699, rot. 128d. Westlond died before the spring of 1449, when his executors (his widow Maud and William Broker) sued a local smith for a debt of £3 owing to his estate.4 CP40/753, rot. 376d. His precise relationship to William Westlond, who sat for Midhurst in 1433, is not known. Perhaps they were father and son.
