The quest for Constance Coffyn’s dower from her previous husband Robert Boniface was not without its problems. Early in 1426 Wyse and his wife appeared in the court of common pleas to claim a third part of certain tenements in Fowey as her dower, but after a delay of a year Boniface’s heirs (his surviving sister and the descendants of the other three) claimed that a settlement of dower had already been made, and had satisfied any claims that Constance might have.2 CP40/660, rot. 132; 664, rot. 478; Cornw. RO, Coode and French mss, CF2/215/54/1-2, 55; CIPM, xxii. 97. Boniface’s coheirs were his sis. Margaret, the wife of Richard Bonok of Lostwithiel, Amice, wife of Thomas Treffry (the da. of his 2nd sis. Margery), Nicholas Cavell of Fowey (the s. of a 3rd sis., Joan), and Lucy, wife of Thomas Collan of Fowey (the da. of the last sis., Christine). It is not entirely clear whether Wyse was Constance’s third or fourth husband, for in 1427 the couple were said to be holding two messuages in Sutton Prior in her right of the inheritance of John Hereford, hosier.3 CP25(1)/46/82/76. It was a different John Wyse, whose wid. Isabel in 1432 accused John Lower* of Lostwithiel of stealing jewels from her house in the London parish of St. Margaret Moses: CP40/684, rot. 121. And it was evidently a third man of the same name whom John Arundell of Lanherne appointed his parker and bailiff at Lanhaddron in Oct. 1453: Cornw. RO, Arundell mss, AR2/900, AR3/349.
