biography text

William Alsnothe, born at Harrietsham in Kent, was admitted to the freedom of Romney early in the reign of Henry VIII. He lived there from at least 1516, when he first began to pay the town taxes, and as a jurat he frequently attended the Brotherhood of the Cinque Ports between 1524 and 1540. He was bailiff at a time when appointment to that office still lay with the archbishop of Canterbury and his election to the next Parliament may have owed something to Cranmer; he did not receive wages but was excused the payment of scots while a Member. He may not have long survived the Parliament, his last recorded election as a jurat taking place on 25 Mar. 1544, three days before its dissolution, but no will or other indication of his death has been found.4Romney assessment bk. 1492-1516, f. 166; 1516-22, f. 82; chamberlains’ accts. 1528-80, ff. 53, 55v, 57; Cinque Ports White and Black Bks. 189-224 passim.
