John Anthony was a Dartmouth merchant who traded mainly in linen but was also a general supplier. From 1503 he occupied a house on the Glovers’ Quay where in 1550 he was assessed towards the subsidy on goods valued at 20s. In 1514 he served as a purser aboard the Christopher of Dartmouth with the royal fleet. His municipal career followed the usual progression and culminated in his return to the Parliament of 1542. He shared a payment of £11 10s. with his fellow-Member William Holland after the first session and was the sole recipient of £8 2s. after the second, presumably on both occasions at the rate of 1s.6d. a day: no record of payment for the third session has been found. Anthony died between making his will on 8 June 1552 and its being proved on 12 Aug. following. After remembering the poor at Dartmouth he provided for his mother-in-law, wife and children and named his wife executrix and William Richards and Robert Holland supervisors.4Watkin, 164, 178, 327, 343; E179/99/321; LP Hen.
