AP RHYS HIR, Jenkin (by 1523-50 or later), of Cardigan.

In June 1543 a Jenkin ap Rhys Hir of the commote of Creuddyn in north Cardiganshire filed a complaint at the great sessions then being held at Aberystwyth. He was perhaps a namesake of the Member returned for Cardigan Boroughs two years later, whose residence at Cardigan can be traced between 1544 and 1550, but the distinction of the name suggests that the townsman was in 1544 a recent arrival from the north of the county. If this was so, it raises the question whether he had been the Member elected to the Parliament of 1542 (for which the return for the Boroughs is lost) since the knight for the shire on that occasion, Morgan ap Rhys ap Philip, lived in the commote of Creuddyn. Little else has been found about ap Rhys Hir: he was assessed towards the subsidy in 1544 on goods worth £11 and a year later on goods worth £20.
