biography text

Apart from his municipal career almost nothing has been discovered about John Baker. It may have been he who in the mid 16th century leased the manor of Biddenham near Bedford, formerly belonging to Newnham priory, but in any case it is likely that he was a townsman, perhaps the son or nephew of the John Baker described in 1506 as ‘sexton of Bedford’. In the 1520s the names appear conjoined, as those of executors or witnesses, in the wills of several inhabitants of Bedford and surrounding parishes.3Beds. Hist. Rec. Soc. xiv. 9; xxxvii. 14, 17, 36, 59, 62, 64, 66.
