No trace has been found of a Cooper family in Berwick in the 16th century and all that is known of John Cooper is that he was dead by the spring of 1532, his name being marked ‘mortuus’ on the Crown Office list revised at that time: it is even possible that he had died before he could take his seat. He may not have been a townsman, for in the retinue book of the 4th Earl of Northumberland for October 1523 a John Cooper is named under the barony of Spofforth, Yorkshire: Cooper’s fellow-Member, John Martin, may also have been a Percy follower. The vacancy left by Cooper’s death was probably filled by John Uvedale.
