biography text

George Coppyn was a Dunwich merchant. For the subsidy of 1524 he was assessed on goods worth £20 and at the time of his death owned six houses, land and a shop in Dunwich and land in the neighbouring parish of Westleton, together with half shares in four ships. He combined trade with a municipal career, and when returned to the Parliament of 1542 he had thrice been bailiff of the town. Nothing is known about his work in the House. By a will made on 5 Dec. 1544 and proved on 8 June 1545 he provided for his family and kinsfolk and left £10 towards the repair of the harbour at Dunwich. He named his wife and son George executors and Robert Browne I supervisor: the witnesses included Andrew Green.3Suff. Green Bks. x. 124; xii. 159. PCC 31 Pynnyng, 35 Langley; E179/181/270.
