Little has come to light about John Gibbs. He was doubtless related to both Robert Gibbs, mayor of Hereford in 1522-3, and Thomas Gibbs, clerk of the city under Henry VIII and four times mayor between 1527 and 1560, and so descended from the Roger Gibbs who had been a Member for Hereford in 1478 and twice mayor under Henry VII. He was assessed for subsidy in the Bystreets ward of Hereford in 1551 on goods valued at £13. After sitting in Mary’s last Parliament he himself became mayor in 1561. In Bishop Scory’s report to the Privy Council in 1564 he was called a ‘neuter’ in religion. The last reference found to him is as an alderman in 1569; no will or other evidence has been found to indicate when he died.3Johnson, 233, 237; E179/117/219; Cam. Misc. ix(3), 15.
