William Grove was returned for Shaftesbury while a student at Gray’s Inn; no doubt his patron was his father’s master the 1st Earl of Pembroke. Within a few years he was to be associated with his father in the stewardship of all Pembroke’s lands in the south-west: the office was granted to father and son in survivorship. They were also made joint keepers of the Earl’s house and park of Stoke Trister in Somerset and at his death Robert Grove left William all his household stuff there. In 1563 William Grove bought an estate in the parish of Donhead St. Andrew, Wiltshire, and two years later the manor of Sedgehill in the same county, but he continued to live mainly at Shaftesbury, where he died on 6 Sept. 1582.
