biography text

Richard Cox, tutor to Prince Edward, suggested in December 1544 that his godson Henry Paget might join the household at Ashridge to be brought up with the prince. Nothing came of this, perhaps because of the reorganization of the prince’s establishment later in the year, and Henry Paget was to have an indifferent education which left him with, among other shortcomings, poor French. The knighthood he received when hardly above 16, and the seat in the Commons found for him two years later, were a measure of his father’s recovery of power on the accession of Mary. Paget went to the Netherlands with his father in 1554 and was entertained by Charles V at Brussels. Returned for a borough controlled by his father’s close associate the 12th Earl of Arundel, Paget is predictably missing from the list of Members who voted against one of the government’s bills. He was not re-elected to the next Parliament, but in 1559 and 1563 he sat for Lichfield, where his father wielded unchallengeable sway. Removed to the Lords for the session of 1566, he died on 28 Dec. 1568, leaving a four month-old daughter by his marriage of the year before. His widow married Edward Carey.3LP Hen.
