biography text

Herbert was not among the principal landowners of Glamorganshire, and his being chosen twice for the county seat must therefore be attributed to his kinship with the earls of Pembroke. The by-election caused by Herbert’s death before the second session of the 1572 Parliament resulted in the return of his brother-in-law, William Mathew of Radyr. Herbert’s only son, George, must have died before reaching manhood: his name never appears on the county lists, and the Cogan Pill estate eventually passed to Nicholas Herbert.1Clark, Limbus, 20, 274-6, 286-7; Vis.
