biography text

Heynes was a clothier and chandler. By an ordinance made in 1560, all the town butchers were to sell him tallow, which gave him a virtual monopoly in the sale of candles. On 14 Sept. 1560, however, he was expelled from the company of burgesses for various misdemeanours committed against the mayor. One John Poltan was elected burgess on the same day, presumably in his place. By April 1561, when Heynes’s monopoly as town chandler was confirmed, it may be presumed he had been readmitted, and he served as mayor a few years later. But in September 1575 the conduct of Heynes and Edward Helyer had shown them ‘insufficient’ to ‘remain in their places’, and this is the last reference found to Heynes.1B. H.
