biography text

The Strodes were an old-established and wealthy stannary family seated near Plympton Erie, where they were well able to secure their own return to Parliament. Strode was also connected with the 2nd Earl of Bedford, his sister Agnes having married Bedford’s agent Edward Yarde. In 1596 Strode and his father were rated for the subsidy at £30 in lands. Strode died 5 Aug. 1581, only two years after his father, leaving landed property worth over £60 p.a. to his son and heir William, aged 19. Strode’s will was proved 9 Sept. that year.1Burke, LG (1939), 2173; Vis. Eng. and Wales Notes, xii. 121; Vivian, Vis. Devon (Harl. Soc. vi), 278; Vis. Devon, ed. Colby, 196; CPR, Vis.
