BARNE, Thomas, of Carlisle, Cumb.

Evidently one of the more active citizens of Carlisle—in 1566 he joined Thomas Pattenson, William Mulcaster and others in petitioning for the removal of the mayor, and is later found serving on juries—Thomas Barne (or Barnes), ‘citizen’, was elected on 30 Mar. 1579 to supply the vacancy caused by the death of Thomas Tallentyre, sitting only in the third and last session of this Parliament in the early months of 1581. He was appointed to the committee for the second reading of the bill for Carlisle on 27 Feb. 1581.

From a complaint by the Scottish ambassador to the Privy Council in 1586 it appears that he shared the hostility shown by Carlisle towards Scottish traders.
