Of a family settled in Glamorganshire since the thirteenth century, Bassett’s marriage connected him with another local parliamentary family, and he was twice elected knight of the shire. He was a member of two committees in the 1571 Parliament, one of which was concerned with a subsidy (7 Apr.) and the other being a conference with the Lords, to deal with the 12 shires of Wales (25 May). Among other property in Glamorganshire and Gloucestershire he owned the manors of St. Hilary, Tregrove and Llantrithyd, as well as the advowsons of Penmark, Landore and Cardiff. The chief beneficiary of his will, dated a few weeks before his death on lo 10 Mar. 1586, was his eldest son and executor, Arnold. Beaupré was left to the widow.
