biography text

The propinquity of Corsham to Bath raises the possibility that Bellott may have been related to Thomas Bellott the patron of Bath abbey, but no connexion has been found. Ambrose Bellott’s father made a fortunate marriage into the Mohun family, which explains the return at East Looe. Bellott’s residence in Devon is something of a mystery, the heralds’ visitation giving Downton, which could have been one of at least three places in the county. He died intestate in 1637.1Vivian, Vis. Devon, 71, 379; Devon Place Names (Eng. Place Name Soc.), 179, 191, 323.
