Returned ‘with the consent’ of the 4th Marquess of Winchester, ‘lord of the borough’ of St. Ives, Breton was presumably a member of the local St. Ives family. Perhaps he was a lawyer. The speech made on a point of privilege by ‘Mr. Bretten’ in the House on 27 Nov. 1601 gives that impression.1C219/34/342; J. H. Matthews, St. Ives, 136; D’Ewes, 655.
